I'm sure that no matter what you do in life - make up artistry, acting, or even dancing, your profession will let you pick up some really interesting and handy tips.
Ever had a pair of pink ballet tights that cost quite a bit, (don't forget I'm 5ft8) so it's a nightmare all around getting my size and the tights on occasion from stores rather than online, ladder as soon as you put them on. Well despair no more for there is actually more use for it before it meets the bin. I'm not saying as dancers we always practise or rehearse in perfect attire-how many leggings, tights or tops have had holes In that we still use in class?
I was on Pinterest the other day and absolutely loved the above image for various reasons-the colour scheme, the photography angle catching both a front and back view, but more strangely I realised after a few looks that her top is in fact old tights! So I went through my dance bag and found two pairs that I will try get like this (will post pictures of my attempts), I found another laddered pair that is still in perfect state so I thought I'm going to cut them and make them footless!
Another handy tip I think is really vital that dancers or performers in general know is there is a lot to stage make up (will do a few posts on the subject) it has to be darker than what you would usually wear even for night time, it has to be dramatic and on some occasion bold but it should never look like your month's worth of make up has been applied in one sitting. It's about application and sometimes a shade darker foundation or powder, attention to eye shadow and eye brows. False eyelashes really are key as they seem to open your eyes and dark lipstick especially the good old red brings a defined face on stage. I noticed the effect of the red lipstick while watching a video of one of my swan lake performances, it wasn't the best due to timing of the three of us dancing, and some errors I nit pick at but my make up looked really good especially my lips.
My biggest tip of all in the stage make up department is NEVER spray hairspray over your make up to make it set! It's the worst thing anyone can do and it makes make up artists cringe. You get cost efficient or more pricey brands that have Make Up Fixing Spray's and these unlike hairspray have less chemicals in, they are designed for the face and really do work. If I don't have any near for a performance; powder patted on with a powder pad will do, sometimes more than one application is needed though. I can highly recommend Clarin's Fixing Spray and love it's rose like smell.
Hope you learnt something new, share your tips on my blog or email me on dancegrace2@gmail.com
Love to all x
